Light Painting

It’s no secret that we absolutely LOVE light painting in the ‘Soc, but these guys make us look like amateurs… almost.

A Few New Changes

I’ve just seen the date of the last time someone posted something on the site, and thought you’d like to know that we’re all still alive and doing PhotoSoc-type stuff!

The main things you’ll no doubt be noticing is that there have been a couple of subtle changes to the website; chief amongst which is Facebook integration. So long as you’re logged into Faceybizzle, you’ll be logged into the site. Also, we’ve now got a Meebo bar at the bottom which lets you post whatever you’re looking at on here to your favourite social network.
Next up is the website translation on the top right – a small addition, but given how many international students we have, we thought it made sense to have it there, although it is a machine translation so don’t expect it to be 100% accurate!

Other changes are pure admin – updating the committee list with our new committee members and their little introductions.

That’s about it, hope you’re all enjoying your summer!

Photographer’s Rights – Pt. 2

As I mentioned the other day, we strive to keep you in the know about where you legally stand when out and about with your camera so that you can enjoy one of your favourite past-times free from harassment.

Unfortunately although every photographer tries their best to keep abreast of where they stand legally, it appears that (in some instances) the Police aren’t kept as up-to-date as we would hope!

In recent news you will no doubt have read about the incident that occurred between freelance photojournalist Jules Mattsson who was prevented from photographing in a public place – something that, I hope those of you who have been to my talk on Photographer’s Rights know is perfectly legal and which there is no ban on, regardless of persons present.

This goes to show that educating the photographer into their own rights is merely half the battle (if that) and that regardless of how well we know our rights the biggest hurdle to overcome keeping the law-instigators in the know.

I’d like to offer our support to Jules. As a group of fellow photographers, the majority of whom enjoy being able to wander around Leeds or another city on one of our trips without the worry of being stopped, this is something that means a considerable amount.

Photographer’s Rights

As we all know, photographer’s rights are something that even the most savvy photographer only has the slightest grasp of – let alone the general public or the people who are enforcing the rights, which is why we’re letting you know about this; Photographer’s Rights Lens Cloth

It’s something that we reckon will be helpful, not only for keeping your lenses nice and clean, but for keeping you informed and for preventing you from being hassled while going about your business!

Fare Thee Well

Yesterday was our fantastic End of Year Picnic in the Park.

It was absolutely fantastic to see so many people joining us for a bit of a chill in the sun, and was the perfect send-off for one of the best years the ‘Soc has had in a little while.

Sadly, it does mean an end to this year of PhotoSoc. We’ll be using the summer to get our trips, Give It A Go sessions, seminars and the always fun-Freshers’ Fair sorted and trying a few alterations to the website (without breaking it, hopefully!).
The first trip, to the Lake District is booked for the 8th-10th October (places will be released in September!) and the Christmas Part(a)y is also booked for the 9th December – bizarrely a Thursday not a Tuesday.

There’s not much else to say other than a big thank you to the outgoing committee for doing a fantastic job this year, and an even bigger thank you to you, our members, for sticking with the society all year round and enjoying the fruits of the committee’s labour.

PhotoSoc Picnic

If you’re coming to the massive PhotoSoc BBQ that was planned for the 5th June, then we’ve got some news for you; it’s now going to be a good ‘ol picnic on Woodhouse Moor (Hyde Park). The date is still the same, so there’s nothing to worry about.

If you weren’t planning on coming; why weren’t you? Hey? You know you want to. Sunshine, food, friends and cameras. C’mon…

Good Luck & Tuesday

We just wanted to drop you all a message to wish you all good luck in the exams which, unfortunately, kick-off this week. They’re a pain in arse, and god only knows why they’re scheduled for when it’s so damn sunny, but you’ve got the mahoosive summer break to look forward to (or if you’re an old-timer; graduation). Good luck everyone!

And, if you’re a smarmy PhD student or just don’t really have many exams, a few of us will be meeting up in Terrace tomorrow at 8 for a bit of the usual PhotoSoc merriment.

Good luck!

Translation?

The eagle-eyed amongst you will have noticed a group of flags on the right.

Seeing as our membership group spans countries and continents in addition to degrees, ages and anything else you care to mention, we thought we would make life easier for you – click the flag and the website will magically appear in the language you’ve chosen. The translation is done by Google, so it might be a little bit rough at times.

Oh and there’s an annoying American flag for English. Which we will change very soon!

Tonight – Last Social of the Year

It’s another Tuesday, so it’s another bit of news about tonight’s social, and this one is a bit of a biggie;

It’s the LAST SOCIAL of the year! (Ignoring the BBQ, of course)

So c’mon down to Terrace at 7.30 for a few drinks, some nostalgia for the past few months and maybe a massive night out (if Charles gets his own way)!

The Rileys

Tonight is the Union’s society award ceremony! Kicking off at 7.15, if I can correctly remember what my ticket says!

The ‘Soc is up for ‘Best Publicity’ alongside the likes of LSR.fm. It’ll be a toughy, but with our new spangly website and Kevin’s poster/display work, we reckon we’re in with a chance.

We’ll be updating things here as the night goes on, hopefully with some good news, so stay tuned!

19.36 – Update; we’ve taken our seats and are waiting for things to kick off! I’m hyper on Skittles while Ed is remaining very composed!

20.56 – Update; it’s the intermission now, so far nothing of our nomination but a lot of very deserving societies have had recognition.

22.48 – Update; that’s it, the ceremony is over! Unfortunately we lost out to a well deserved LSR for best publicity. Congratulations LSR!
